In memory of Weinstock’s contributions to the industry, this award is presented in grateful appreciation for outstanding individual achievement and continued efforts on behalf of the association and the industry.
Scot Colby: 2007 Morris F. Weinstock Memorial Award
Colby has been involved in the alarm and security industry for more than 25 years. He began his career as a security police officer, working for four years with the United States Air Force and then working as a security officer for the MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas. Since that time, he has been entrenched in the technological and association side of the industry. Colby has spent the majority of his career with one company – Bayou Security Systems Inc, in Shreveport, La., where he has worked his way up to executive vice president – his current position.
Colby has spent a great deal of his own time volunteering for associations, with the Louisiana Burglar & Fire Alarm Association (LBFAA) (now the Louisiana Life Safety and Security Association) and the NBFAA. With the LBFAA, Scot served as vice president, grievance chairman, three-year term as and president and chairman of the board. Colby was elected to the NBFAA Executive Committee in 2002 as a vice president. He served as president of NBFAA from 2004 to 2006 and held the position of immediate past president from 2006 to the end of June 2008. As President for NBFAA, he led the way for NBFAA headquarters to be moved from Washington DC to Dallas, thereby saving NBFAA thousands per year.
Colby has served the industry for many years in various capacities and has been a mentor and leader to many in the association and in the industry. As a Sara E. Jackson award winner, he was recognized for his work as the Fire Committee Chair; today he is still actively influencing the future of the industry through his work on the Remote Station Committee, the NFPA 72 Signaling Systems Committee and the NFPA 730/731 Committee.
Frank Burke: 2008 Sara E. Jackson Memorial Award Recipient
The 2008 Sara E. Jackson Memorial Award was presented to Burke for his outstanding leadership as chair of the NBFAA Public Relations Committee.
Burke has been an active member of the security and fire alarm industry for the past 25 years and has held leadership positions in local, state and national industry associations. He is president of USA Alarm Systems, a Monrovia, California full-service integration company.
As president of the California Alarm Association in 1995-1996, Burke convinced the state chapter to be and active participant in the NBFAA Youth Scholarship Program. To this day, he believes it is the single most effective program in our industry to promote good will with law enforcement and fire services. During his tenure as PR Committee chair, Burke was instrumental in the expansion of the program and the addition of participating chapters.
Frank has been a passionate supporter of the two major public relations programs for our industry – the First Line of Defense award and the Youth Scholarship Program. Under his guidance, the PR Committee made great strides to improve and expand these programs.
