Executive Perspective: Double Bonu$ Program Results in Win for All

By Tonja Jenkins
Senior Director of Business Development

Thanks to sponsorships from ADI, Criticom International, and the National Training School (NTS), nearly 300 companies have taken advantage of NBFAA's Double Bonu$ Program, which began in February.

The program was established with donations from the three sponsoring organizations, and all new member companies who joined the association between Feb. 15 and Aug. 15 will receive $150 in incentives over and above the discounts and services available to all 2005 members.

In addition to the gift certificates, both ADI and Criticom International will make a donation of $50.00 to NBFAA for each new member company which NBFAA will in turn share with the Chartered State Associations (CSAs) that have signed up to promote the program. It's a win for the new member, win for the state association, win for the sponsors, win for current members (because they have another 300 fellow companies helping to bear the responsibility of supporting the industry) and a win for the NBFAA!

While the inaugural round of the New Member Double Bonus Program comes to an end, NBFAA looks forward to the possibility of running another round in 2006 and we wish to extend a heartfelt thanks to our first ever sponsors of the program: ADI and Criticom International!

NorthStar Alarm Services Saves Family's Home

In June 2005, Mr. and Mrs. Jones had just added an additional monitored smoke detector to their existing NorthStar Security System when their Columbus, Ohio, home nearly went up in smoke. The culprit: a candle left unattended in a bedroom.

But luckily for the Jones, who weren't home at the time, NorthStar's central station quickly dispatched the fire department to their home.

When the Jones returned home and found their door ajar they called the police, who informed them it was their lucky day.

Confused by the situation and the statement, they learned the police officer had been dispatched to the location earlier that day when the fire broke out.

Though there was some damage to their dresser, they were incredibly relieved to find their house was still standing and their priceless valuables still intact. Mr. Jones said he believes that the smoke detector they added to their system saved their house and their valuables.

Cooperation and Compromise Needed to Solve Alarm Issues

Stan Martin, executive director of the Security Industry Alarm Coalition (SIAC), discusses the necessity for cooperation and compromise in solving alarm issues in a recent article in Security Sales.

SIAC, Inc is a 501(c) (6) not for profit Delaware corporation formed by major national security associations in North America - the board of directors includes two representatives each from the NBFAA, Canadian Security Association (CANASA), Central Station Alarm Association (CSAA), and Security Industry Association (SIA). False Alarm Ordinance Watch

A number of cities across the United States are responding to false alarms by enacting ordinances with costly fines.

  • In Rialto, Calif., the first two false alarms are free; after that each fine will grow by $50.00.

  • Clive, Iowa, now limits the number of free false fire and security alarms to residents and business owners. Additional response calls will cost them anywhere from $100 and up. In 2004, there were 747 false alarms responded to, but only 50 since the ordinance came into effect.

  • Permits for fire alarms are required in the Alachua County area of Florida. One false alarm is allowed per year with the permit, and the cost of fines could exceed $400.

Major Alarm Policy Change Averted: Non-Response for Dallas?

On July 21, the local Dallas news CBS 11 reported the Chief of Police David Kunkle was going to propose a major alarm policy change for the city. Kunkle said in order to deal with the large number of false alarms occurring he wanted to have the city's police force stop responding to all security alarms. This would exclude panic and hold-up alarms unless the alarms were visually verified.

However, Stan Martin, executive director of the Security Industry Alarm Coalition (SIAC) and Chris Russell of the North Texas Alarm Association (NTAA) challenged the chief's proposal and may have saved the day for Dallas residents and business owners.

The city council was presented with the facts on how the recently passed state law involving alarm ordinances would take away a large amount of revenue from the city if it were to change to non-response. Russell said he estimates the income from the alarm permitting and false alarm fines could even make millions of dollars for Dallas.
