It’s an exciting time to be on Capitol Hill!  2010 is a national election year - all 435 house members and 34 senators are up for re-election which will decide the power balance in the Congress for the next two years.  Join us, and your ESA colleagues, for our annual Day on Capitol Hill, April 27 – 28, 2010 in Washington, D.C., as we meet with these congressional members and staffs.

These face-to-face meetings are a major part of our government relations efforts to garner support from our legislative representatives on issues that are critical to our industry and public safety.

All appointments will be made in advance by our Director of Government Relations, John Chwat and his staff at Chwat & Co.  John will obtain security clearances on all attendees and will put together a packet of information on the issues.

Some of the key issues to be reviewed include:

While in Washington, prior to meeting with legislators, attendees will be given specific instructions on what to address with their legislators and how to make their presentations effective. While there may be other legislation added to this list, the major issues include:

  • Gaining support for passage of ESA-backed legislation to create a Federal Background Check for the industry;
  • Support industry legislative initiatives impacting the Department of Energy, EPA and other federal agencies;
  • Impacting the Health Care Reform Debate;
  • Opposing the Employee Free Choice Act and supporting the construction industry on OSHA, Labor Department actions that could hurt business operations and profits;
  • Support for the ESA's life safety Balanced Approach to legislation, policy and potential federal grants such as our legislation for Department of Health and Human Services, Long-Term Care Life Safety Act.

Congressional speakers, networking and social events will round out this two day gathering of ESA members from across the country. For a complete schedule, click here.

GE Diamond Social Event:

So much fun - it’s a crime!

This year, our GE Diamond Social event will be a tour and reception at the National Museum of Crime & Punishment (NMCP). Described by Good Morning America as a “must see for CSI fans,” the NMCP includes a crime lab and the filming studios for America's Most Wanted. A simulated FBI shooting range, high-speed police-chase, and hundreds of interactive exhibits and artifacts pertaining to America’s favorite subject fill the 3-floor, 25,000 square foot museum.

We will have a self-guided tour of the museum from 6-7 pm and rendezvous in the America's Most Wanted studio from 7-9 pm for cocktails and hors d'oeuvres.
