Chapter Workshop Attendees Gain Knowledge from Presenters

NBFAA members were treated to a Chapter Workshop with featured speakers:

Cathy Rempel
Cathy Rempel from The Summit Group spoke about improving visibility, a topic that applies to both individual businesses and state associations.

Ron Walters
Ron Walters, Security Industry Alarm Coalition (SIAC) director, discussed the “Alarm Factor.” This is a fundamental concept that every alarm dealer should know about responsible alarm management.

The last hour of the Workshop was devoted to a panel discussion about Alarm Response Management Committees at the state level. Glen Mowrey (Chief Ret), Law Enforcement Liaison from SIAC, moderated the discussion of ‘best practices’ with subject matter experts from the industry and law enforcement.

Glen M. Mowrey retired January 1, 2004, as Deputy Chief, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department. Prior to his 32 years of service with Charlotte-Mecklenburg, he spent four years with the Miami-Dade Police Department in Florida. His experience covers many aspects of law enforcement including patrol, investigations, vice, planning and research, crime prevention, and special and support services. Mowrey is an active member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police and serves on its Private Sector Liaison Committee, Annual Retraining Conference Committee and Chairs the Conference Host Agency Committee. He currently serves as National Law Enforcement Liaison with the SIAC, and is a member of the Alarm Industry Research and Educational Foundation (AIREF) and Chairs its Research Committee.

Bonnie Bradley
Vice President and General Manager for ADS Security
Augusta, Ga.

Bonnie Bradley serves on the Board of Directors of the Georgia Electronic Life Safety & Systems Association. She is vice president and general manager of ADS Security and is responsible for the Augusta, Ga. operations. Bradley spent 20 years at Palmetto Security as vice president, responsible for Operations and Human Resources. Currently Mrs. Bradley is chairman of the False Alarm Reduction Committee for the state association and serves on the Alarm Management Committee within the Georgia Chief’s of Police Association.

Lou Dekmar
Chief of Police
LaGrange, Ga.

Lou Dekmar has been Chief of Police, LaGrange, Ga. since 1995. Responsible for instituting significant personnel, operational, and service-related initiatives, improving training and educational curriculum, and developing and expanding community and problem solving policing programs, reducing liability and crime rates and increasing customer satisfaction. In 2005 Dekmar was appointed Chief of Public Safety, in addition to police chief, responsible for supervision, personnel and management of the LaGrange Fire Department. In addition, he is a board member, State of Georgia’s Board of Public Safety, and a board member, Georgia International Law Enforcement Exchange.

John Knox
NBFAA Secretary and President of Life & Property Security Systems Inc
Knoxville, Tenn.

John Knox is the president and owner of Life & Property Security Systems in Tennessee where he started his career in 1982 as a technician. He serves on the Tennessee Chiefs of Police Association Alarm Management Committee, a position he’s held since 2004. He is the recipient of the NBFAA Chapter President of the Year, Sara E. Jackson Memorial Award and Technician of the Year awards and the Tennessee Burglar & Fire Alarm Association Joe Duncan Award. Knox currently serves as secretary of NBFAA’s Executive Committee.

Heroes Scholarship Reception and Dinner

This year, NBFAA and the Alarm Industry Research Educational Foundation (AIREF) hosted a special reception and dinner to honor the heroes of Sept 11, 2001.

From a venue overlooking Ground Zero, NBFAA and AIREF honored those lost on Sept. 11, paying special attention to the public safety heroes who gave their lives trying to help those trapped in the World Trade Center. The highlight of the evening was the presentation of a $174,000 check to the Families of Freedom Scholarship Fund®.

On Sept. 10, 2007, a formal check presentation took place in New York City at a special dinner honoring those lost on 9/11. At the presentation, the president of Scholarship America, Dr. Clifford L. Stanley, Major General (retired), Deputy Assistant Chief James Manahan from the New York City Fire Department and Chief Michael O’Neill, New York City Police Department, accepted a symbolic check from AIREF and NBFAA officials.

More than a hundred of the industry’s leaders participated in the evening which included a reception and sit-down dinner at the Hilton Millenium in a room overlooking Ground Zero. The sold-out event was the highlight of the conference.
