One of the ways that we can work together as an association is through a collective voice on important industry issues at the national level. By coordinating our efforts and speaking out on the issues, we can make a difference.
NBFAA members roamed the halls of Congress, rubbing elbows with the nation’s most powerful group of people, all the while advocating issues important to them, their businesses and the industry. NBFAA’s first Day on Capitol Hill, held May 1 and 2, gave them first hand experience in legislative affairs.
“I thought it was an awesome opportunity to interact with the congressmen and their staffs,” said Kevin McGraw, associate counsel for Protection One Inc. “This was my first time to participate in an NBFAA function. I was impressed by the camaraderie amongst all the attendees and how, despite being competitors, everyone was so willing to come together and work for the good of the industry.”
More than 40 NBFAA members, including association board members and state leaders from across the United States, joined the Government Relations team during the two-day event. In addition to the visits to the Capitol Hill offices, members met with Congressmen Jim Saxton (R-NJ) and Michael Arcuri (D-NY) at evening events on Tuesday night, May 1.
Day 1: A Congressional guest speaker met with us during a reception and dinner on Tuesday night at the US Capitol.
Day 2: Wednesday morning, attendees were addressed by a Congressman at an NBFAA-hosted breakfast, followed by a briefing and full day of visits on Capitol Hill in support of our 2007 Legislative and Policy Objectives in Congress. After a day of walking the halls of Congress debrief and attendees relaxed at a reception hosted by NBFAA.
The following is a summary of the 2007 Legislative and Policy Objectives:
NBFAA’s 2007 Legislative and Policy Objectives include pushing for legislation to provide government funding for the professional installation of fire alarms in colleges, universities, nursing homes, assisted living facilities and hospices. We will continue to push the belief that “Fire Detection + Fire Suppression = Fire Safety.” We are also advocating for a federal tax deduction for professionally installed security devices in commercial and residential buildings.
Some of the other issues NBFAA will be tackling in 2007 include:

“My overall impression
was that we had a message that has strong bipartisan interest. Regardless if I was
speaking to Democratic,
Republican, Senate or
House staff, all were
interested in the messages I was delivering. Clearly,
every one of us can make
a difference if we make
the effort.”
